It isn't only introverts who benefit from writing or sketching ideas before discussion. One way to help all students, especially introverts, learning disabled, and English language learners, is to use Dialectical Journals, or "DJs," as I like to call them, to help students think critically about the text before they discuss it.
The way I use DJs in the classroom is to ask students to create a page and divide it in half vertically. In the left column they copy a quote of their choosing from the text. In the right column they analyze the quote in a brief paragraph. I've included some examples from my high school English students' DJs. Figure 4.10 is from a 9th grade student. The text they were reading was Flowers for Algernon.
